Esther Woolfson
Esther Woolfson is a British writer. She is known for her books on birds.[1][2] She grew up in Glasgow. She studied Chinese at the University of Edinburgh and Hebrew University.[3]
In 2025, Woolfson's text "Magpies" appeared in the Comprehending section of the WACE ATAR English examination, an annual examination conducted by Year 12s in Western Australia seeking entry to university. Students were asked to analyse how language features of the text constructed a relationship between Woolfson and magpies, as well as compare how stylistic features construct a representation of magpies in comparison to a satirical news article. The School Curriculum and Standards authority were forced to issue a statement after students 'cyberbullied' Woolfson following the examination, comparing Woolfson's text to Yaoi or Romantic towards the bird.
