Esteghlal Tehran Basketball Club (Persian: باشگاه بسکتبال استقلال تهران) is a professional basketball club based in Tehran, Iran. It is the basketball section of the multi-sport club Esteghlal F.C..

The club is considered one of the oldest and most historically significant teams in Iranian basketball, competing in the top-tier leagues for both men and women. Following a long period of inactivity, the club was officially relaunched in 2025.

History

The Taj Era (1949–1979)

The basketball section of the club was founded in 1949 under the name Taj (The Crown) and quickly established itself as a leading power in Iranian basketball.[1]

During this era, Taj dominated the Tehran Clubs Championship, which was the most important competition in the country before the establishment of a national league.[2] The club contributed numerous players to the Iran men's national basketball team, including those who participated in the Basketball at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, such as Abolfazl Salabi, Hossein Sudi-Pour, and Kamaleddin Mashhoun.[3]

The women's basketball team was also highly successful during this period, winning multiple championships. Following the Iranian Revolution in 1979, the club's basketball section was dissolved, and the team remained inactive for almost five decades.

Re-establishment (2025–Present)

The Esteghlal Basketball Club was officially relaunched in August 2025 (Mordad 1404) for both men's and women's competitions, marking its return after a 47-year hiatus.[4]

The men's team immediately entered the Iranian Basketball Super League (IBSL). The club secured the services of Mehran Shahintab, Iran's most decorated basketball coach, as the head coach.[5] Among the notable signings for the new era was Arsalan Kazemi, the Iranian national team captain, and the American former NBA player Isaiah Whitehead.[6]
