Development

Jeethu Joseph stated that the idea for a third part came to him after completing Drishyam 2, beginning with the climax that first took shape in his mind. During the film's release, when Mohanlal asked whether there was a possibility of another sequel, he shared with him the envisioned climax of the potential continuation, which Mohanlal liked and encouraged Jeethu to develop further.[3] In February 2021, shortly after the release of Drishyam 2, producer Antony Perumbavoor told Manorama News that Jeethu was contemplating about Drishyam 3 and had discussed it with Mohanlal, expressing hope that it would happen.[4] A few days later, Jeethu told The Quint, "if I get a thread good enough to explore, I will start developing it. It will be a crime if I don't".[5] At the Mazhavil Entertainment Awards in August 2022, Antony confirmed that Drishyam 3 would "definitely happen" and they were working on ideas.[6] In November that year, Jeethu stated that he had "something in mind. However, I'm still looking for the spark to move it forward".[7]

In a March 2024 interview with Deccan Chronicle, Jeethu said he was exploring the possibility of a sequel and would proceed only if he found a good idea, stressing that he would never make a sequel purely for financial gain.[8] In August 2024, during an interview with Red FM, he revealed that he was stuck on a particular area of the story, though he already knew how the film would end.[9] On 20 February 2025, Drishyam 3 was officially announced by Mohanlal through his social media handles.[10]

In June 2025, Jeethu said that the screenplay is nearing completion.[11] On 17 July 2025, speaking at a college function in Muvattupuzha, Jeethu said that he had completed the climax the previous night, marking the completion of the first draft of the screenplay. He added that he had been working on the writing in the early mornings and felt relieved to have finished the draft.[12][13] Later that month, he revealed that scripting was progressing and that he had received numerous emails containing story suggestions for a third sequel, all of which he deleted without opening to keep his ideas uninfluenced. He also said that filming was scheduled to commence by mid-September.[3] In a September 2025 interview, Jeethu stated that the screenplay had been completed after five drafts, noting that his earlier versions were not approved by his daughters. He recalled that he began outlining the screenplay during a trip to Europe in April of that year, completing the scene order while travelling. Upon returning to India, he continued writing in the early mornings while simultaneously working on the shoot of Valathu Vashathe Kallan.[14]

Jeethu stated that he had focused on "what could have happened in their lives over the six or seven years since Part 2".[15] He also indicated that Drishyam 3 would not serve as a conclusion to Georgekutty's story.[16]

Filming

Principal photography began on 22 September 2025 at Sree Narayana Law College, Poothotta in Ernakulam, with a traditional pooja ceremony.[17][18] By the end of September, Jeethu shared a still featuring the family dining in their house at Vazhithala, Thodupuzha.[19] Filming was undergoing at Thiruvalla in early November.[20]

Release

The Hindi remake of the film, starring Ajay Devgn as Vijay Salgaonkar, is scheduled for a theatrical release on 2 October 2026.[21] In a letter to the Bombay Stock Exchange in November 2025, Panorama Studios, the production company behind the film's Hindi remake, disclosed that it had acquired the "exclusive worldwide theatrical rights" as well as the "digital and airborne rights" from Aashirvad Cinemas.[22]

Remake

In June 2023, citing a "source close to the development" of the Hindi Drishyam remakes, Pinkville reported that "Abhishek Pathak and his team of writers have cracked a basic core plot for Drishyam 3, which Jeethu Joseph and his team loved. They have taken the idea from the team of Hindi Drishyam and are now working towards developing it", adding that it would be the final film in the franchise and that both the Malayalam and Hindi versions would be shot and released simultaneously.[23] However, Jeethu soon clarified in another media outlet that "there is no truth to the rumours suggesting that we are also actively listening to stories and scripts for Drishyam 3 from outsiders [...] no decision has been taken regarding the possibility of shooting the film simultaneously with another project".[24]

In an interview with Mathrubhumi published on 20 July 2025, Jeethu stated that the makers of the Hindi Drishyam were awaiting the completion of his screenplay. He explained that although they had initially considered developing their own sequel before the Malayalam version entered production, the idea was abandoned following warnings that it could invite legal consequences. He added that the Hindi team later proposed filming both versions simultaneously, though no final decision had been taken on the matter.[3] However, in an interview with Deccan Chronicle published three days later, he stated that media reports about "taking legal action" against Hindi producers were "false and a media hoax," adding that "no such situation has ever arisen" and that "everything will be settled amicably".[25] In September, Jeethu stated that he had shared the English translation of his screenplay with the production teams involved in remaking the film in other languages, while emphasising that "the original will be in Malayalam."[26]

In November, Jeethu reportedly stated in a social media interaction that the Malayalam version would be released first, with other versions following after two months.[27]

Future

Speaking at the Manorama News Conclave in August 2025, Jeethu stated that he was uncertain whether a fourth film would be made.[28] In an October 2025 interview, he added that Drishyam 3 would not be a conclusion, "maybe I'll make a fourth one if a new angle arises. I'm not saying I will, but the possibility is there".[16]
