Dr. Mehta's Hospitals is a privately owned, multi-specialty, and tertiary care facility Chennai, India, founded in 1933.[1] The hospital operates two campuses, in Chetpet and Velappanchavadi, and provides multi-specialty services including pediatrics, neonatology, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, gastroenterology, neurosurgery, and critical care.[1] As of 2025, the institution’s chairman is Sameer Mehta.[1]
History
The hospital was first opened in 1933 by Dr. Anantrai Jayantilal Mehta, also known as A.J. Mehta, as a small clinic and nursing home.[2]
In 1955, the facility relocated to Chetpet, evolving into a multi-specialty surgical and birthing unit with one delivery room and two convalescence rooms. Dr. Mehta’s Hospital’s Private Limited was officially incorporated on 4 October 1994. Today, Sameer Mehta serves as Chairman, Dr. Pranav Mehta as Director, and Mr. Dilip Mehta as Emeritus Chairman.
Expansion
In 2014, the hospital announced plans for a new multi-acre campus near Thiruverkadu.[2] Four years later, in 2018, the Velappanchavadi campus (also known as the Global Campus) was inaugurated on 5.5 acres, with 220 operational beds, and the intention of scaling up to 1,000 beds.[3] According to their website, the campus includes emergency care, cardiology, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and a neonatal intensive care unit.[4]
Education
The hospital is an NBE accredited teaching institution with more than 100 full-time resident trainees and over 250 alumni. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, post-doctoral fellowship, and HSSC certification programs.
Research
The hospitals have published over 80 indexed papers, both national and international, between 2020 and 2024. Subjects include neonatology, pediatric nephrology, and obstetrics.
