Chandigarh Junction railway station (station code: CDG[1]), serves the union territory city of Chandigarh.[2] The station is at an elevation of 330.77 metres (1,085.2 ft). It is 8 Kms from the City Centre of Chandigarh i.e. Sector 17.[3]

History

The Delhi–Panipat–Ambala–Kalka line was opened in 1891,[4] and the Chandigarh–Sahnewal line (also referred to as Ludhiana–Chandigarh rail link) was inaugurated in 2013.[5]

Ambala–Chandigarh sector was electrified in 1998–99 and Chandigarh–Kalka in 1999–2000.[6]

Amenities

Chandigarh railway station has computerized reservation facilities, General Railway Police outpost, telephone booths, tourist reception centre, waiting room, retiring room, vegetarian and non-vegetarian refreshment room, and book stall.[7] In 2014, Chandigarh railway station got escalators.[8]

The railway station is 8 km from the city centre. The airport is 7 km. City buses, auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are available at the station for local transportation.[7]

As part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Chandigarh railway station has been identified for phased redevelopment. Plans include new G+3 station buildings on both Chandigarh and Panchkula sides ( 8,367 square meter each), improving accessibility and passenger movement. A 72-metre-wide and 80-metre-long covered concourse for seamless, weather-protected transit across platforms and two 12-meter-wide foot overbridges (FOBs) to streamline inter-platform movement. The expanded parking area of 24,515 square metre will be given with integrated traffic flow designs for both city sides.The station will have 30 lifts and 10 escalators for barrier-free movement, enhanced waiting areas (1,180 square meter concourse with 1,050 seats), food courts, retail spaces, retiring rooms, and co-working spaces, paid lounges and other commuter-focused amenities, 4,000 square meter of commercial area, including kiosks, food outlets, and shopping spaces.

There are plans to construct a bus stand with parking space of 4-5 buses.[10]
