Cappadocia Church
Cappadocia Church (Turkish: Kapadokya Kilisesi; also known as the Cappadocia Protestant Church or the Cappadocia Salvation Church) is a Christian church and local congregation in Avanos, a town in Nevşehir Province in central Turkey.[1][2][3][4][5] Founded in 2019, the church holds Turkish-language worship services within a Protestant theological framework, according to its own statements.[6] Several online travel and business directories list it as one of the places of worship and visitation in Avanos.[3][4][5]
History
The church was founded in 2019 in the district of Avanos by pastor Yeşua Cengiz.[7] According to the church's own description, its founding purpose was to establish an open, Turkish-speaking Protestant congregation in Cappadocia, a region with a long Christian history.[6]
Since its establishment, the congregation has held regular worship services in Avanos and has become one of the venues where Protestant worship takes place in the Cappadocia region.[1] The church describes itself as the first active Protestant church in Cappadocia and emphasises its role as a place of worship open both to local residents and to foreign visitors.[6]
The congregation is also listed under the name "Kapadokya Kilisesi" in several Christian directories that gather contact information for Protestant churches in Turkey, as well as in online business directories.[8][4]
Location
Cappadocia Church is located on 107th Street in Yukarı Mahalle in Avanos, a town in Nevşehir Province in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey.[2][3] It lies within walking distance of the town center and the walking paths along the Kızılırmak River.[3] Online map and business-directory services list the church under the name "Kapadokya Kilisesi" among the current worship and visitation points in Avanos.[4][5]
Beliefs and theological identity
The church describes itself as a Protestant church.[6] Its stated beliefs are framed by Protestant theology with an emphasis on the Bible, a personal relationship with God, faith in Jesus Christ and teaching based on Scripture.[6] The congregation emphasises the individual decision and personal faith dimension of Christian belief.[1]
Vision, mission and activities
According to its own statements, the church's aim is that people come to know God and move step by step towards a personal relationship with him.[6] Within this framework, worship services are described as times when participants reflect together on God's activity in their lives and are encouraged to seek a personal relationship with God.[1]
Regular activities at the church include:
Worship services typically include hymns, preaching from the Bible, prayer and fellowship among the congregation.[6] The church also carries out other activities, notably free distribution of Bibles and online Bible courses.[1] These services are intended both for local residents and for people from other cities or visitors to Cappadocia who seek information about the Christian faith and access to the Bible.[6]
Structure and leadership
Cappadocia Church operates under the spiritual leadership of pastor Yeşua Cengiz.[7] As pastor and spiritual leader, Cengiz is responsible for overseeing worship services, preaching, pastoral care and discipleship activities.[7]
In addition to the pastor, the church has a council of elders. The congregation also includes a diaconal ministry in which deacon Anıl Sarıkaya serves.[1] The elders and deacons work alongside the pastor in meeting the congregation's spiritual and practical needs.[1]
Congregation profile
Attendance at the church's services varies over time, and the number of regular participants is not stated as a fixed figure. According to the church, the congregation consists mainly of Turkish Christians together with foreign visitors to the region.[6] Visitors from abroad often attend services during their stay in Cappadocia in order to pray or continue their worship practices.[6]
The church presents itself not only as a local congregation but also as a place of worship and prayer open to Christians visiting Cappadocia, and in this sense emphasises its role as part of both the local and the wider Christian church.[6]
Significance in Cappadocia
Cappadocia is regarded as an important region in Christian history for its rock-cut churches, monasteries and early Christian settlements.[9][10] Many of the historic rock-cut churches in the region are now visited as museums or archaeological sites.[9]
Within this historical background, Cappadocia Church is presented as an example of a contemporary Turkish-speaking Protestant congregation conducting regular worship services in Turkey.[6][1] The church describes itself as the first Protestant church active in Cappadocia and states that by offering a functioning congregation after many centuries, it plays a symbolic role in terms of historical continuity.[6]
Because it is listed in various travel and guide websites as "Kapadokya Kilisesi" among the places to visit in Avanos, the church is described not only as a local worshipping community but also as a meeting and worship point for Christian travellers visiting the region.[3][5]
