Barat Academy is an independent, coeducational, Catholic, college-preparatory school located in Chesterfield, Missouri, United States.[2][3] Founded in 2007, the school enrolls students in grades six through twelve and follows the educational traditions of the Society of the Sacred Heart.[4]
- History
Barat Academy opened in 2007 in Dardenne Prairie with a freshman class, adding grades 10–12 over the following three years. Its first graduating class completed studies in May 2011. The school is named after Madeleine Sophie Barat, founder of the Society of the Sacred Heart.[4] An anonymous donation of approximately $1.65 million funded tuition for the inaugural class of 150 students.[5]
In 2011, the school relocated to Chesterfield after financial difficulties following the 2008 financial crisis, which led to the collapse of its mortgage-holding bank.[6] Enrollment declined from 250 to 210 students after the move.[7]
The school faced further challenges in 2022 when Midland States Bank filed an eviction lawsuit.[8] In April 2023, Barat Academy announced a pause in in-person instruction for the 2023–2024 academic year, affecting about 20 students, as it prepared to vacate its leased facilities.[9]
- Curriculum
Barat Academy offers electives, Advanced Placement courses, and opportunities for college credit through partner universities. A Service Learning program integrates community service with coursework in English, science, social studies, and theology.[4]
- Rankings
According to Niche.com, Barat Academy received an overall grade of “A” in its 2022 ranking of private high schools in Missouri, placing 20th among 92 college-preparatory schools.[10]
- Athletics
In 2013, the Barat Academy Boys Golf Team won the Missouri Class 1 Boys Golf State Championship.[11] The team repeated the achievement in 2014.[4]
