Armageddon is a song by American rock band From Ashes to New, released on May 19, 2023, via Better Noise Music as a single from the deluxe edition of their album Blackout.
Background and release
"Armageddon" was released to promote Blackout (Deluxe), part of a conceptual narrative the band describes as a prequel to their debut album Day One.[1] According to the band, the song "focuses on the current state of the world and how the fighting and the division is leading to some of the worst social times in recent history."[2]
In an interview with New Noise Magazine, Danny Case highlighted "Armageddon" along with "Nightmare" and "Broken By Design" as examples of songs on "Blackout" that bring out the singers' interplay, create a lively groove, and focus on emotional lyrical content, drawing inspiration from Linkin Park and other early-2000s influences.[3]
Composition
Sources describe "Armageddon" as a rap-rock song combining rap-style verses with melodic choruses and heavy rock instrumentation. It opens with atmospheric synthesizers, transitions into guitar riffs and driving rhythms, and balances electronic passages with energetic rock sections.[2][4]
Critical reception
MXDWN said that "Armageddon" has something for everyone...this song...is filled with a wide range of musical stylings that boast a broad appeal."[5] Metal Planet Music observed that Armageddon "shows off moments of quiet and calmness mixed into the extreme, metalcore tracks."[6] Riff Magazine described the track in the context of the album, writing that "the anger and urgency on 'Armageddon' most closely fits the lyrical concept of 'pre‑apocalyptic' times."[7] Top Shelf Music praised Armageddon as having "themes of societal turmoil and human fragility," calling it "more than music; it's an immersive experience...reflects the world's chaos" with "an addictive rhythm and harmonious blend of vocals and instrumentals."[8] Brutal Planet Magazine commented on the single release, stating that the song "focuses on the current state of the world and how the fighting and the division is leading to some of the worst social times in recent history."[9] Bravewords described Armageddon as "powerful" and highlighted the band's "hybrid, high‑energy mix of hard rock, nu-metal/hip-hop, electronic and alternative" sound.[10]
