Early life

Angela Pang Ka-lai grew up in Hung Hom, Kowloon. She has an older sister and a younger brother, both of whom attended English primary schools.[1]

Career

She once participated in the Junior Police Call Singing Competition. In 1987, she accompanied her friends to participate in the CBS/Sony Asia Star Singing Competition hosted by Hong Kong Sony Music and won the championship. She also represented Hong Kong in Tokyo, Japan to compete together with representatives from China, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. Although she did not win the prize in Japan, she was invited by Hong Kong Sony Music to sign a contract as a singer. As her family requested that Hong Kong Sony Music wait until she finished her studies before officially becoming a singer, she did not release her first solo EP Goodbye Nineteen until February 17, 1989. In the same year, she was arranged by the company to join Asia Television as a partner with Baby Bo Pui-yue and Fanny Cheng Sui-fan,[2] They traveled to Japan together to shoot the music special "Kagoshima New School Trio".[3][2]

At about 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2004, after sending a friend home, Pang was robbed on Shanghai Street in Jordan, her skull was fractured and she nearly died.[4]

In August 2013, Pang sang "Never Like Being Alone" (Chinese: 從不喜歡孤單一個) with Red Sun Entertainment Chairman Chu Sau-yan at a fundraising event,[5] Pang appeared composed and calm performing opposite Chu Sau-yan, and therefore won praise from netizens for her professionalism. In December of the same year, she rejoined Hong Kong Sony Music Entertainment to prepare for the release of an album.[6]
