André Palmeiro (1569–1635) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary who was born in Lisbon and entered the Society of Jesus in 1583.[1][2] He was appointed Ecclesiastical Visitor of the Asian missions of the Jesuits in 1618,[3] with general jurisdiction extending from Mozambique to the Moluccas.[4]

Palmeiro traveled from Portugal to oversee Jesuit missions across Asia, a function he carried out until his death in 1635. His jurisdiction included South India, Sri Lanka, Macau, Beijing,[5] and other regions he did not personally visit, such as Ethiopia and Japan.[6] He shifted Jesuit missionary focus from Japan to Tonkin and Cochin China (modern Vietnam). Before his appointment as Visitor,[7] he served as rector of the Colégio de São Paulo at Braga in northern Portugal.[8] In 1626, he traveled to China to study the structure and competitive aspects of the imperial examination system.[9]
