Aminu Abdullahi Alkali (born 3 July 1961) is a Nigerian politician and former civil servant who has served as the Deputy Governor of Taraba State since 29 May 2023.[1][2][3]

Early life and education

Alkali hails from Zing Local Government Area in Taraba State. He began his early education at St. Thomas Primary School, Zing, obtaining his First School Leaving Certificate in 1974. He proceeded to Government Secondary School, Jalingo, where he completed his secondary education in 1979.[4]

In 1982, he earned an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) from the College of Agriculture, Jalingo. Two years later (1986), he obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Farm Management from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. He later acquired an Advanced Diploma in Public Administration (1993) from ABU‑Kongo Zaria, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration from Adamawa State Polytechnic in 2009.[5]

Civil service and career before politics Alkali began his civil service career in 1979 with Zing Local Government (then part of Gongola State). Over the years, he worked in various capacities across all sixteen Local Government Areas of Taraba State, rising to become Director of Agriculture and Natural Resources in the state's local government service. During his service, he was involved in rural development initiatives, including the establishment of local‑government farms and youths’ farmers’ clubs, aimed at strengthening agricultural production and grassroots empowerment across the state.[6]

Political career

Alkali entered partisan politics under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In the 2023 Taraba State gubernatorial election, he was selected as the running mate to gubernatorial candidate Agbu Kefas. The ticket won the election and was sworn in on 29 May 2023.

As Deputy Governor, Alkali holds statutory responsibilities as the second executive officer of Taraba State. His portfolio reportedly includes rural and grassroots development, primary health‑care oversight, and coordination of local government‑level agricultural policies.

Health challenge and return to office In late 2024, Alkali reportedly went on medical leave abroad, prompting speculation about a possible replacement. However, the state government clarified that no process for substitution had been initiated, and confirmed that Alkali remains the duly elected Deputy Governor.

He returned to the state capital, Jalingo, in August 2025 and resumed official duties.[7][8][9]
