African Pride Accelerated (APA) is an annual LGBTQ summit held in Nigeria to empower leaders and activists.[1] It is organised by the Women's Health and Equal Rights Initiative (WHER).[1][2][3]
Organization
Participation in the summit is through a call for applications, during which activists, leaders, stakeholders, and individuals apply to take part.[1][4] The event is organised by the Women's Health and Equal Rights Initiative, through its Executive Director, Akudo Oghuaghamba, in a bid to advance LGBTQ equality in the country.[5]
History
Afica Pride Accelerated was founded in 2022 to celebrate the work of LGBT people in the face of violence and oppression.[6] The event was reprised in 2023.[7]
The 2024 event addressed topics such as:[8]
- The Future of LGBTQ+ Rights in Africa
- Confronting Anti-Rights Movements in Africa
- "Ubuntu" as a Framework for Resistance
- Safety in Activism: Protecting LGBTQ Advocates and Allies
- Media as a Tool for Social Change
- Mindful and mental health: healing, mindfulness, relaxation, and body positivity.
- Safety and security: Basic self-defense techniques tailored for LGBTQ+ persons
The 2025 event, titled "Rooted in Resistance", brought together activists, individuals, and leaders and served as an avenue for movement-building, activism, and education in the face of oppressive laws.
