On September 5, 2025, the Kansas City Chiefs played the Los Angeles Chargers in a National Football League (NFL) regular-season game, at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil, which was the second NFL game played in that country, and the first NFL regular-season game streamed for free on YouTube. The Chargers defeated the Chiefs 27–21.[1][2][3]
Background
The NFL announced in May 2025 that the game would be staged at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, which had hosted the first NFL regular-season game in Brazil the previous year, between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers. Following the perceived success of the 2024 game, the NFL expanded its international schedule for 2025, included the return to São Paulo, with the Chargers designated as the home team for a season-opening game against the Chiefs.[4] The NFL also announced at that time that the game would be streamed for free on YouTube.[4]
The game was the first NFL game to be globally free, as it was streaming on YouTube.[5] Many YouTubers , including IShowSpeed, promoted the game and livestreamed themselves watching it while adding commentary.[6] On September 3, 2025, the NFL dropped a promo for the Chargers-Chiefs game featuring MrBeast titled I Bought the NFL.[7] In this video, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced that Jimmy Donaldson, "MrBeast" had bought the NFL.[8] MrBeast said in the promo that he would change the 53-man roster to a 54-man roster and give the extra spot to a YouTuber.[9] The video received widespread attention, with viewers discussing whether MrBeast had in fact purchased the NFL.[10] It was later disclosed that he did not, and it was a collaboration between MrBeast and the NFL to promote the São Paulo, Brazil game and the first NFL game streamed on YouTube.[11]
The game was also the second NFL game ever played in Brazil, after the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles played there in 2024.[12]
Global reach
There were a total of 47,627 fans who attended the game in São Paulo, Brazil. According to YouTube, the game drew a global average audience of 17.3 million viewers, with 16.2 million viewers in the U.S. alone and an additional 1.1 million viewers from other countries.[13]
Halftime show
The Halftime show was performed by Colombian Pop singer, Karol G.[14] She performed a medley that included her Billboard Hot Latin Songs No. 1 hit Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido, Un Gatito Me Llamó, and Papasito, performing parts of each in both English and Spanish.[15] Karol was dressed in a brown and yellow miniskirt with a pineapple bra.[16]
Final statistics
After scoring first, with an unanswered touchdown in the first quarter and a field goal early in the second, the Chargers led 10–0. They would continue to lead throughout the game, although both teams scored several times, and the Chiefs came to within one point in the third quarter, and within two points early in the fourth quarter, at which point the Chiefs failed on a two-point conversion attempt that would have tied the game.[1][3]
AP News reported that Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert "earned style points for his scramble and sideline slide that capped a 318-yard, three-touchdown performance".[2] The win marked the first victory for the Chargers against the Chiefs since 2021.[2]
