2025 Bengaluru cash van robbery

The 2025 Bengaluru cash van robbery was a daylight armed robbery of about ₹70 million (about US$800,000; £600,000) in cash, that took place on 19 November 2025 in Bengaluru, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. The robbers posed as officials of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the country's central bank, detained the vehicle moving the money between bank branches and escaping in a van.

Robbery details

During the afternoon of 19 November 2025, near the Ashoka Pillar in Jayanagar, Bengaluru, the robbery took place as the cash van, transporting money from an HDFC Bank branch in JP Nagar to HBR Layout, was intercepted.[1][2] Five to six armed men using several cars to block the van's path, posed as RBI officials claiming to investigate regulatory violations. They used force to take custody of the cash boxes containing ₹7.11 Crore, then made the van staff, which included a custodian and two armed guards, get into their vehicle, and told the driver to wait nearby at the Dairy Circle flyover.[1][3] The robbers then transferred the cash to another vehicle and escaped. The well planned robbery made use of areas not covered by CCTV cameras, used several vehicles with different number plates, and did not use mobile phones so the police could not track them.[4][5][2]

Investigation and arrests

Bengaluru Police hurried to open an investigation, examining the footage from 50 CCTV to trace the roads used during the robbery.[2] They managed within 60 hours to arrest three suspects linked to the event, a CMS vehicle movement in charge, a former CMS employee, and a serving police constable, revealing significant insider collaboration. They also recovered ₹5.76 crore and the vehicle used in the robbery. According to reports they were six members all together, each having a specific role in the robbery.[2][6]

Aftermath

The robbery highlighted vulnerabilities in security protocols of cash transportation firms and led to scrutiny of CMS Info Systems for lapses in safety norms mandated by the RBI. Authorities vowed to tighten oversight to prevent recurrence of such high-profile heists.[1][7]
