Billie Jean King defeated defending champion Evonne Goolagong in the final, 6–3, 6–3 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1972 Wimbledon Championships.[1] It was her fourth Wimbledon singles title and eighth major singles title overall.

This marked the first Wimbledon appearance for future three-time champion, seven-time runner-up, and world No. 1 Chris Evert; she lost to Goolagong in the semifinals.
