Šolen z brega is a Social novel by Slovenian author Zoran Hočevar. It was first published in 1997.[1][2][3]

Plot

The novel is a satirical allegory of Slovenia before the dissolution of Yugoslavia. The story, which takes place on the streets of Ljubljana between mid-January and the summer of 1991, is told from the first-person perspective of Janez Kolenc-Žani, also known as Šolen. He is a reserved, somewhat "timid" retired senior official who lives on Breg in Ljubljana and rents part of his large apartment to students. His relatives, however, are trying to take control of his apartment. Šolen dreams of a great love and is filled with memories, fears, and both beautiful and ugly events. Despite its complex structure, the novel is an easy read.[3][2]

Reception and Awards

The novel was critically well-received and was nominated for the Kresnik Award, which it won in 1998. One critic noted that the novel had been circulating among publishers for five years before it was finally published, expressing surprise that a "mildly ironic, humorous, witty" book with "undeniable literary weight" was overlooked for so long.[2]
