William H. Hendelson

William H. Hendelson (geboren 26. Juli 1904 in Berlin; gestorben 28. Mai 1975 in New York City) war ein deutschamerikanischer Enzyklopädist und Herausgeber.

William H. Hendelson war ein Sohn des Buchhändlers und Eigentümers des Verlags Theodor Knaur Nachfolger Gabriel Hendelson (1861–1916) und der Martha Sandberg. Er erhielt Unterricht von einem Hauslehrer und besuchte danach in Berlin-Grunewald das Gymnasium. Ab 1922 arbeitete er als Mitgesellschafter in dem nunmehr von Adalbert Droemer geführten Verlag, in welchem er Knaurs Enzyklopädie und Knaurs Weltatlas herausgab. Nach der Machtübergabe an die Nationalsozialisten mussten er und sein Bruder 1934 aus dem Verlag ausscheiden.

Hendelsohn gelang 1938 die Emigration in die USA, wo er 1944 die Staatsbürgerschaft erhielt. Im Jahr 1940 gab er eine Neuauflage der Outline of history von H. G. Wells heraus, 1941 mit Oswald Goetz eine Rembrandt-Bibel. Ab 1944 bis 1963 war er bei Funk & Wagnalls Herausgeber der World scope encyclopedia, von 1953 bis 1963 der Standard International Encyclopedia, von 1946 bis 1969 des Encyclopedia Yearbook und ab 1971 gab er bei Funk & Wagnalls die 27-bändige New Encyclopedia heraus, sowie weitere enzyklopädische Bücher und Reihen, die auch im Supermarkt vertrieben wurden, auch als sogenannte Luxusausgaben.
