Richard Brandt (Philosoph)

Richard Booker Brandt (* 17. Oktober 1910 in Wilmington, Ohio; † 10. September 1997 in Ann Arbor) war ein US-amerikanischer Philosoph und Hochschullehrer.^[1]

Richard Brandt studierte Philosophie, zunächst an der Denison University, wo er 1930 den Bachelorgrad erwarb. Einen weiteren Bachelorgrad erhielt er am Trinity College der University of Cambridge. Im Jahre 1936 promovierte er zum Ph.D. an der Yale University. Als Hochschullehrer lehrte Brandt zunächst bis 1964 am Swarthmore College und war dann bis 1981 Professor für Philosophie an der University of Michigan.

Brandt orientierte sein philosophisches Denken am Empirismus und war als Moralphilosoph ein bedeutender Vertreter des Utilitarismus in den USA.

Er war seit 1975 Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Sciences.^[2]
