Norman T. Feather

Norman Thomas Feather (* 27. Juli 1930; † 28. Oktober 2023 in Melbourne) war ein australischer Psychologe und Professor der Flinders University,[1] zuletzt emeritiert.

Leben

Seine berufliche Laufbahn begann er 1952 als Dozent an der University of New England (UNE); er trug maßgeblich zum Aufbau des Fernstudienangebots für Psychologie bei. Er stieg zum senior lecturer und später zum Associate Professor auf. 1958 konnte er als Fulbright-Stipendiat an der University of Michigan promovieren. 1960 kehrte er an die UNE zurück und lehrte dort weitere sieben Jahre, bevor er 1967 als Gründungsprofessor für Psychologie an die heutige Flinders University wechselte.

Werk

Seine wissenschaftlichen Interessen lagen vorwiegend in der Sozialpsychologie, der Entwicklungspsychologie, der Valenzforschung, der Attributionsforschung und der Forschung zum Selbstkonzept. Er arbeitete im Bereich der Handlungs- und Wertepsychologie; er stellte hier ein Erwartungs-Wert-Modell der Motivation auf. Zudem beschäftigte er sich mit den psychologischen Auswirkungen von Arbeitslosigkeit, mit Gerechtigkeitskonzepten von Verdienst und Anspruch sowie Pionierforschung in Australien zu oder Hochleistern (sog. „Tall Poppies“). In seiner entwicklungspsychologischen Forschung untersuchte er Beharrlichkeit, Persönlichkeit und Angst.

Er verbrachte die letzten zwei Jahre seines Lebens in Melbourne, wo er in der Nähe seines Sohnes Mark sein konnte.
