National Wildlife Area
Als National Wildlife Area (abgekürzt NWA; französisch Réserve nationale de faune; wörtlich übersetzt: „nationales Wildtiergebiet“) werden Schutzgebiete in Kanada bezeichnet, die gemäß dem „Canada Widlife Act“ zum Zwecke des Wildtierschutzes, der Forschung und der Vermittlung von Wissen über Wildtiere eingerichtet wurden.[1] Das kanadische Umweltministerium („Environment and Climate Change Canada“) verfolgt bei der Verwaltung und Planung der „National Wildlife Areas“ einen Ökosystem-Ansatz.[1]
2025 gab es 64 „National Wildlife Areas“ (einige davon in Regionen mit relativ unberührten Ökosystemen), die national bedeutende Lebensräume für Tiere und Pflanzen beherbergen.[1] Die „National Wildlife Areas“ des kanadischen Umweltministeriums schützen über 3,5 Millionen Hektar Lebensraum, wovon fast die Hälfte marine Lebensräume umfasst.[1]
„National Wildlife Areas“ können nur auf Flächen des Bundes ausgewiesen werden.[1] Befinden sich die Grundstücke nicht im Bundesbesitz, kann das kanadische Umweltministerium mit dem Grundstückseigentümer eine Vereinbarung zur Einrichtung und gemeinsamen Verwaltung einer „National Wildlife Area“ treffen, das nicht unter die Verordnung fällt.[1] Partnerschaften mit den Provinzen, indigenen Gruppen und privaten Grundstückseigentümern können durch Programme wie das „Habitat Stewardship Program for Species at Risk“ sowie über „Habitat Joint Ventures“ geschlossen werden.[1]
Eine Verordnung legt fest, welche Aktivitäten in „National Wildlife Areas“ verboten oder erlaubt sind.[1]
