Loxodontofilaria ist eine Gattung der Filarien.[1] Sie sind Parasiten bei afrikanischen Elefanten und afrikanischen Huftieren.[2]
Merkmale
Der Ösophagus ist ungeteilt und dünn. Das Hinterende der Weibchen ist eine runder oder spitzer Konus. Die Schwanzpapillen sind durch zwei oder drei Paare entlang des Schwanzes ergänzt.[2] Die Vagina weist eine deutliche Biegung und eine Kammer auf.[3]
Systematik
Die systematische Stellung der Gattung ist umstritten. Hodda (2022)[1] weist sie als selbständige Gattung aus. Nach Anderson (1976) werden sie als Untergattung von Dipetalonema eingestuft, auch das Interim Register of Marine and Nonmarine Genera weist sie als „nicht akzeptiert“ aus.[4] Diese provisorische Zuordnung lässt sich durch neuere Untersuchungen aber nicht mehr aufrechterhalten.[3] Genetische Untersuchungen aus dem Jahr 2015 ordnen sie in die Hauptklade 3 der Onchocercidae, hiernach ist die Gattung eher mit Dirofilaria und Onchocerca verwandt und nicht mit Dipetalonema, welches zur Hauptklade 4 gehört.[5] Das Interim Register of Marine and Nonmarine Genera weist folgende Arten aus:[4]
