GMA Dove Award 1971
Im Jahr 1971 fand die dritte Verleihung des GMA Dove Award statt, des größten Preises der Gospelmusik. Alle Preise wurden nachträglich aufgrund einer Stimmenwerbung durch The Blackwood Brothers für ungültig erklärt.
Preisverleihung
Im dritten Jahr fand die Verleihung am 9. Oktober in Nashville am Plaza neben dem Municipal Auditorium[1] statt. Neben den Preisen wurde auch die Gospel Hall of Fame eingerichtet und als erste Mitglieder Dad Speer und Jim Waits aufgenommen.[2] Nominiert für einen Eintrag in die Hall of Fame waren noch Lee Roy Abernathy, James Blackwood, Albert Brumley, Brock Speer, Mom Speer, Frank Stamps und Virgil Oliver Stamps, James D. Vaughn.[1]
Im Anschluss an die Verleihung wurde bekannt, dass die Gruppe The Blackwood Brothers den Wahlprozess beeinflusst hatte. So hatte sie zahlreiche neue Mitglieder für die wählende Organisation geworben und dann diese dazu bewegt für gewisse Kandidaten zu stimmen. So waren fast ein Dritten der wählenden Mitglieder des Gospel Music Association auf die Werbeaktion der Gruppe zurückzuführen.[3] Insgesamt waren mehr als 3.000 Personen wahlberechtigt.[1] Ein weiterer Vorwurf gegenüber der Gruppe war, dass diese auch zu ihren Gunsten mit Geschenken warb. Zwar hatte die Gruppe keine der Regeln der Organisation verletzt, erzeugte jedoch starke Bedenken bezüglich der Integrität der Wahl. Daher erklärte der Vorstand der GMA die Wahl für unfültig. James Blackwood, selbst Mitglied dieses Vorstands und der Gruppe, bat in einem Statement um Entschuldigung und versprach das Verhalten nicht zu wiederholen. Die Organisation führte für die Zukunft Regularien ein, die solches Verhalten unterbinden sollten.[3] Das Jahr wird in der Zählung der Organisation nicht als Awardjahr geführt und alle Gewinner des Jahres nicht als offizielle Dove Award Gewinner.[4]
In der Retrospektive zeigt dieser Skandal jedoch, dass die Gospelmusik Teil der allgemeinen Musikbranche geworden war und der Gewinn des Dove Award für den Erfolg einer Gruppe beitrug.[3]
