Cecil Morton York
Cecil Morton York (* 29. April 1857 in Kensington, London; † 23. Februar 1935 in Northwood, London) war ein britischer Schauspieler der Stummfilmzeit. Er war Teil jener Generation, die das Theater mit dem neuen Medium Film verband und damit die Grundlagen für das britische Kino der 1930er-Jahre legte.[1][2]
Leben
York wurde 1857 als Cecil Morton Smith in Kensington geboren.
Er begann seine Karriere auf der Bühne, bevor er in den 1910er-Jahren zum Film wechselte. So spiele er von 1891 bis 1892, und erneut in den Jahren 1913 und 1914, am Prince’s Theatre in Bristol.[3] Laut einer Quelle spielte er 1894 auch im Star Theatre am Broadway in New York City, wo er in dem Bühnenstück To Nemesis [Love and Hate] von Mrs. Romualdo Pacheco mitwirkte.[1]
Seine Filmrollen spiegeln die Vorliebe des frühen britischen Kinos für literarische Stoffe und historische Dramen wider. Mit seiner markanten Erscheinung und aristokratischen Ausstrahlung wurde er häufig in Rollen besetzt, die Autorität, Würde oder historische Bedeutung verkörperten – typisch für das britische Kino der 1910er- und 1920er-Jahre. Er war 1913 als Gentleman Jackson in The House of Temperley, 1920 als Sir Ensor Doone, Earnshaw, in Lorna Doone, Wuthering Heights, 1925 als Sir Blundell Maurice in Trainer and Temptress und 1926 als Sir Trevor Trebarrow, Earl of Westchurch, in The Sea Urchin, Riding for a King zu sehen. Besonders seine Darstellung des „Grand Lunar“ in The First Men in the Moon – einer frühen Filmadaption des Romans von H.G. Wells – gilt als bemerkenswertes Beispiel für Science-Fiction in der Stummfilmära. Er war auch in einer Reihe von Kurzfilmen zu sehen, beispielsweise 1918 in der „Eve“-Kurzfilmreihe.[1]
York verbrachte seinen Lebensabend in Denville Hall, einem Altersheim für Schauspieler in London. Er verstarb im Jahr 1935 im Alter von 77 Jahren.
